WHAT IS AN 
INDEPENDENT
 LIVING CENTER?


An independent living center is a:
  • Consumer-controlled,
  • Community-based,
  • Cross-disability,
  • Non-residential,
  • Private nonprofit agency

An independent living center offers four core services to people with disabilities:

  • Information and Referral
  • Living Skills Training
  • Advocate Assistance
  • Peer Sharing

The Center for Independent Living of Central Nebraska, Inc. offers these services to people with disabilities in order to help them meet their goals for independence.

The center serves 39 counties in South central and Southwest Nebraska.



LIVING SKILLS TRAINING

The Center offers individualized services in the following independent areas:

  • Homemaking
  • Financial Management
  • Self Care
  • Personal Development

Medicaid Waiver

The Center provides resource development and services  coordination for qualified medicaid recipients for 39 counties of Central and Southern Nebraska. This program is available for people who:

  • are between the ages of 18 and 65 years

  • experience a disability

  • are Medicaid-eligible, and 

  • have needs equal to those of Medicaid-funded residents in nursing facilities

Center Staff conduct assessments to determine eligibility and then work with the consumer to provide services in the consumer's home. Services available to consumers on the Medicaid Waiver include the following:

  • in-home help

  • respite for family caregivers

  • transportation

  • assisted living

  • home modification

 

HOUSING COUNSELING

The Center assists people with disabilities in locating, acquiring, and maintaining safe, affordable, accessible housing.

TRAINING AND TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE IN DISABILITY RIGHTS AND LAWS

The Center offers training and technical assistance on the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), Section 504, Fair Housing Act, and other civil rights legislation affecting persons with disabilities.

ASSISTIVE TECHNOLOGY

Assistive technology devices are items or pieces of equipment that are used to increase, maintain, or improve functional capabilities of individuals with disabilities.
The Center can help in the following ways:

  • Demonstration/Peer Networking
  • Equipment Rental/Loan
  • Information and Referral for design, fabrication, installation, modification, maintenance, and repair

DRIVER EDUCATION
AND TRAINING

The Center is licensed by the Nebraska Department of Motor Vehicles as a Driver Training School. The driver education and training instructors are certified by the Nebraska Department of Motor Vehicles and are able to perform the following services:

  • Driver Education and Training Evaluation

  • Classroom Instruction

  • On-the-road Driving Instruction

  • Adaptive Equipment Evaluation and Training
